Spirit Airlines Urged to Reject Frontier Offer, JetBlue Postpones Boston-London Route, Angry Travelers at Manchester - May 31, 2022

  • A shareholder proxy firm has recommended that Spirit Airlines reject Frontier's merger proposal.
  • JetBlue has postponed its upcoming Boston-London route from July 19th to August 4th citing aircraft delivery delays from Airbus as the reason.
  • KLM announced Friday it will add a Premium Economy class to its North American flights starting in July to compete with this growing class trend with other premium carriers.
  • Singapore Airlines has reopened its lounges at Changi Airport (Singapore) after giving them a $37 million facelift that offers 'private day rooms, showers, cooking stations, and cocktail bars overlooking the runway'.
  • Australian carrier Rex is cutting at least 5 routes on June 30 in an effort to improve the airline's financial performance.
  • Footage from Manchester Airport shows a huge queue (some estimates were 3 hours) as angry travelers try to get their baggage checked.

Thousands of Flights Cancelled So Far on Memorial Day Holiday Weekend, More Cancellations Industry-wide - May 29, 2022

  • Several thousand flights have been cancelled already at the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend by multiple carriers. Airlines say this is due to 'bad weather and "air traffic control actions"' but many believe it's really due to staff shortages.
  • easyJet has cancelled over 200 flights blaming a 'software glitch' as the reason. Other reports 'suggest' the carrier has not been able to keep up with the holiday surge in traffic.
  • TUI Travel has cancelled 'many' of its flights. They blame 'various operational and supply chain issues'.
  • Aeroflot has announced a new route between Saint Petersburg and Vladivostok. The carrier will use a Boeing 777 on the twice weekly route.

Frontier Launches Cancun Service from Houston, American adding routes from New York, Turkish Airlines Launches Seattle Service - May 28, 2022

  • Frontier Airlines is launching non-top routes this week from both Bush Intercontinental and Houston Hobby to Cancun. 
  • American Airlines is adding 6 new routes from JFK as well as LaGuardia.
  • Yesterday, Star Alliance member Turkish Airlines launched its 12th U.S. route...non-stop service between Seattle and Istanbul.
  • Qatar Airways has unveiled a Boeing 777 with custom livery to commemorate the upcoming World Cup in Nairobi.
  • Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has warned the long security queues that have been dogging the airport are likely to continue through the summer.
  • Ontario International Airport (ONT) (California) has opened 2 premium 'Aspire' lounges that include 'plush' seating, hot and cold food, WIFI and more.
  • Norwegian startup long-haul carrier Norse Atlantic confirms they will be launching flights from the UK in June to New York.

KLM to Halt Ticket Sales - May 27, 2022

  • KLM will halt ticket sales at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport 'in the coming days' because of unmanageable crowds due mainly to staff shortages
  • Air Montenegro will start a new route between Istanbul and Podgorica (Montenegro) with 2 flights a week starting June 18. 
  • PLAY (Iceland) has stopped plans for 3 weekly flights from Reykjavik Keflavik (KEF) to Orlando (MCO) as high fuel prices have out economic pressure on the carrier.
  • Air Canada has launched its 5 weekly non-stop flights between Milan Malpensa and Montreal...the only carrier to offer non-stops from Canada to Italy.
  • Avelo Airlines today started its non-stop service between Washington D.C./Baltimore and Southern Connecticut with 4 weeklies.
  • Legendary 'All-Inclusive' pioneer Club Med has opened its newest European resort, Club Med Magna Marbella. This marks the brand's return to Spain

Will Alaska Airlines Pilots Strike?, Delta and American Reducing Summer Flight Schedule - May 26, 2022

  • The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the union which represents Alaska Airlines' pilots, have voted to authorize a strike. The pilots have been seeking new contract for 3 years and they (obviously) feel this is the best recourse to get movement on the negotiations. 
  • Delta Air Lines is actually decreasing its flight schedule over the summer to help ease flight delays and disruptions for its customers.
  • The Points Guy is reporting that American Airlines will be cutting and/or adjusting 7 international routes 'it adjusts its flying to softer-than-expected demand'. The routes are here.
  • ELLE Magazine is entering the hotel world with the launch of two new boutique hotel concepts, Maison ELLE and ELLE Hotel. Maison is set to open in Paris and 'ELLE' will open in Jalisco, Mexico.
  • Delta has issued a travel waiver over the Memorial Day weekend that's effective May 26-28 for the following cities/airports: Atlanta, GA (ATL), Baltimore, MD (BWI), Boston, MA (BOS), Detroit, MI (DTW), New York – LaGuardia, NY (LGA), New York – Kennedy, NY (JFK), Newark, NJ (EWR), Washington D.C. – Dulles (IAD), Washington D.C. – Reagan (DCA), White Plains, NY (HPN).
  • Palm Springs Airport has received federal funding and plans to use it to strengthen its infrastructure as the facility grows.

KLM Sued Over Emissions, Mask Policy Still in Effect, New Service from United, Avelo, Condor - May 25, 2022

  • KLM has had a legal action proposed against them by Fossielvrij NL, a Netherlands 'green initiative group', alleging the airline misleads the public over the sustainability of flying with fossil fuels.
  • United Airlines started daily flights from Naples to Newark. The route, resumed from 2019, will be active until the end of the summer 2022.
  • There are still a number countries requiring masks on planes and in airports. Here is the list.
  • Ontario Airport (Southern California) expects over 1.7 million passengers to pass through its airport for the summer season which will exceed its 2019 traffic (pre-pandemic).
  • Avelo Airlines has launched its non-stop service between Los Angeles and Boise with 2 flights weekly.
  • German leisure carrier Condor Airlines has launched 3-times-a-week service between Boston Logan and Frankfurt using 767s.
  • Qantas has taken a majority ownership position in Australian travel company TripADeal and is offering incentives for their frequent flyer points on a variety of trip options.
  • London Gatwick is expanding is footprint with 50 new flights in to Canada this summer that includes Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver and Halifax.
  • Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) is reopening its Terminal 2 on May 29th after a 2 year closure due to flattened demand (pandemic). The airport is also expanding the terminal for future increased demand.
  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is partnering with CNX to develop cleaner fuel emissions from natural gas that it then converted to alternative fuel.

Former NFL Player & United Worker Throw Punches at Newark, Flyer Delays Dominate Travel News - May 24, 2022

  • A former NFL player was arrested on assault charges at Newark Airport after a physical scuffle with a United Airlines employee that saw both throwing punches after being captured on social media video. 
  • Qantas has resumed its route between London and Perth 2 years after the pandemic halted it and sparked a 'war' between Qantas CEO Alan Joyce and Australian Premier Mark McGowan.
  • Connecticut may be able to use $2 million in state funds to incentivize a carrier to run a route from Hartford to Jamaica, according to reports.

  • United Airlines cancelled a couple's roundtrip tickets to Italy (they scored a great fare last year when prices were lower)...the carrier said 'the aircraft was no longer available. United offered that they rebook a 'new' flight...for $4,000 more.
  • Travel demand is surging in Southern Texas to Mexico and other international destinations. Because of this San Antonio Airport is planning billions in renovations and expansion in the coming years.
  • London Heathrow Airport plans to reopen Terminal 4 in July as the post-pandemic travel rebound continues. The terminal was shut in 2020 to consolidate passenger traffic due to reduce air travel at the time.
  • Through a new partnership, Qantas is now offering flyers the option to purchase airline tickets now and pay later for them and earn frequent flyer points in the process.
  • Emirates has a special offer until May 30th: Book a flight to Dubai and receive a free hotel stay in the city.
  • Alaska Airlines' regional carrier Horizon Air is cutting its daily service between Sea-Tac and Yakima to one flight per day due to staffing issues.
  • Iberia has been fined by regulators $260,000 (US) for cancelling 4,000 round-trip tickets between Rio de Janeiro and Paris. The tickets were 'mistake fares' (ultra-cheap flights released on accident typically). Iberia meant to advertise the fares for $1,180 and instead promoted them for $118.

  • Forbes lays out a credit card showdown for Delta flyers to find which is the right card for you: The Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card vs The Platinum Card from American Express. 
  • Jet Airways has been given the go-ahead to restart airline operations and received a revalidated Air Operator Certificate (AOC) by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The carrier had been shut due to financial problems.
  • Delta has issued a travel waiver through May 22nd for the Southern and Northeastern U.S. due to weather. 
  • Bahamian carrier Western Air has made its 1st flight from Nassau to Fort Lauderdale on Thursday and will fly the route daily and offers no change or cancellation fees.
  • Breeze Airways has launched its first flight to Jacksonville International Airport from Richmond, Virginia on Thursday, the carrier has had to scale back and cancel some of its planned routes.
  • Spanish budget airline Vueling is adding 2 routes from London Gatwick Airport: Jerez on July 1 and Genoa (Italy) on July 3.

Class Action Against Virgin Australia, Emirates Posts a $1 Billion Loss, Delaware Now Has No Commercial Air Service - May 15, 2022

  • Investor bondholders have launched a class action lawsuit against Virgin Australia claiming the airline misled investors on investment in their Velocity loyalty program which lost value after the pandemic hit.

Flyers 'Unhappy' with Airlines, United Cutting 7 Routes, Airlines are Concerned in Mexican Airspace  - May 11, 2022

  • A survey by J.D. Power finds flyers are unhappy with the cuts the airlines have made in the name of 'safety'...adding they think the carriers will keep these cuts permanently. 
  • United will cut 7 long-haul routes in June (3 from Newark and 4 from Washington Dulles) due to a lack of planes (UA's Boeing 777s have been grounded) but the carrier expects to get them back online in July and restart the routes.
  • A passenger jet bound for Istanbul was forced to return to the gate in Tel Aviv yesterday when plane crash photos were sent to multiple passengers on board.
  • Multiple Airlines have concerns for Mexican airspace as a slew of incidents and warnings have the carriers questioning their safety.
  • Emirates and Royal Air Maroc have launched a codeshare partnership to expand each airline's foortprint in Dubai and Casablanca.
  • United has signed an overseas purchase agreement for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) becoming the first U.S. carrier to do so.

U.S. Regional Carrier Wants Inexperienced Pilots Approved, Routes by Lynx, Asiana,  Caribbean, Taos Air  - May 10, 2022

  • Air France has unveiled new Boeing 777-300ER business class seats that actually have a sliding door.
  • Republic Airways, a regional air carrier operator for United, Delta and American (mainly Embraer 170 and 190 jets), has petitioned the FAA to let new graduate pilots fly with only 750 flight training hours instead of the standard 1,500.
  • Airbus will launch a third aircraft assembly line at its plant in Mobile, AL which will result in 1,000 new jobs.
  • Canadian carrier Lynx Airlines announced 2 new routes: Calgary and Edmonton to St. Johns.
  • While Hong Kong International Airport has barely seen ANY international passengers due to Covid restrictions, Singapore’s Changi Airport is bulging at the seams with flyers as the country ended restrictions.
  • Asiana is rebooting its European routes (Seoul Incheon to Frankfurt, Paris, Rome and more) and will see 50% of its pre-pandemic traffic over the summer.
  • Caribbean Airlines has introduced a new route: Kingston, Jamaica to Orlando, Florida twice weekly. The route starts July 1.

American Restarts More Dublin Routes, Emirates Launches Premium Economy on its A380s, Jetstar and WestJet Routes   - May 9, 2022

  • American Airlines has resumed service from Dublin (DUB) and 3 US cities: Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Dallas Ft. Worth (DFW) and Charlotte (CLT).
  • British Airways has cancelled more than 120 flights today while claiming they have given flyers 'advanced notice'.
  • Qantas is cutting domestic flights by as much as 30% and points flyers to spur spending of the rewards.
  • Emirates is launching its new Premium Economy class seats on some of its Airbus A380 routes (London, Paris, Sydney and Christchurch) with tickets going on sale June 1.  
  • Qantas offshoot Jetstar will launch two new routes from Canberra to Melbourne and the Gold Coast September 16.
  • WestJet has launched service between Calgary (YYC) and Rome Fiumicino (FCO) with 3 flights weekly using a 787 Dreamliner.
  • Flyers that have airline miles can now redeem them to help Ukrainian refugees flee their country from the Russian invasion.

Passenger Incidents Down 57% After Mask Mandate Lifted, Frontier and Swoop Start More Routes  - May 8, 2022

  • The FAA is reporting that airline incidents involving unruly passengers have dropped 57 percent since the lifting of the Federal mask mandate.
  • Security screening lines at Leeds Bradford Airport (UK) reached three and a half hours and more causing irate passengers and general mayhem due to severe staffing shortages.
  • Frontier Airlines has begun service from Miami (MIA) to Kingston Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica (KIN) marking the first service to the capital by the carrier.
  • Canadian carrier Swoop has restarted flights from Winnipeg to Kelowna as well as Edmonton and Toronto.
  • Sarasota Bradenton Airport (SRQ) will get new flights from Minnesota by Allegiant with the service slated to begin October 6.
  • easyJet plans to cut 6 seats from 60 of its Airbus A319 aircraft so it can reduce the number of crew by 1. The move will trim costs due to staff shortages.
  • New Indian carrier Akasa Air has received regulatory approval to start flights and operations in July and has ordered 72 Boeing 737 MAX jets.

3 Americans Found Dead at Sandals Resort, Allegiant, Breeze, Avelo Launching New Routes, Spirit Doesn't Want JetBlue    - May 7, 2022

  • 3 Americans have been found dead at a Sandals resort in The Bahamas on Friday...according to multiple reports and local authorities.
  • Allegiant announced they will launch 7 new non-stop routes: From Provo (PVU) to Portland (PDX), San Diego (SAN), Las Vegas (LAS) and Sanford, Orlando (SFB). Also, routes from Akron (CAK) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Minneapolis (MSP) and Bradenton (SRQ). More details HERE.
  • The union representing Spirit Airlines flight attendants said their workers were forced to sleep on airport floors during the carrier's operational meltdowns late last year.
  • Breeze Airways will launch 5 daily flights out of Provo to New York/Westchester, Vegas, San Bernardino, California, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The flights start later in the summer.
  • Avelo Airlines has started service between Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) in Connecticut.
  • Spirit Airlines executives have expressed reservations with JetBlue's takeover bid...the reason why they intend to stick with Frontier's offer.
  • Ballys Gaming has been chosen by the city of Chicago to construct a $1.7 billion casino and entertainment complex.

Boeing Moving from Chicago to Virginia, Delta Restricting Lounge Access & Cutting Routes  - May 6, 2022

  • Boeing announced they will be moving their corporate headquarters from Chicago to Arlington, Virginia as they aim to work closer to lawmakers in Washington, D.C. on oversight issues in the wake of the deadly 737MAX crashes.
  • The Points Guy is reporting that Delta will cut 3 domestic routes: Detroit (DTW) and Oklahoma City (OKC), Boston Logan (BOS) and Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and Detroit (DTW) and Oakland (OAK). Cuts suggest sluggish bookings.
  • Delta says its tightening restrictions on its Sky Club airport lounge access (3 hours) because of growing demand that is crowding the lounges.
