Scottsdale Airport History
Scottsdale Municipal Airport was originally built in the early 40’s. It was then known as the Thunderbird Field #II. The airport was used as a training ground for pilots during World War II. After the war, the name of the airport was changed to Scottsdale Airport. In 1966, a new terminal building was constructed. This is the same building that is used today.
Scottsdale Airport is owned by the City of Scottsdale and operated by Scottsdale Airports, Inc. The airport was originally built in 1941 as a training base for the United States Army Air Corps. In 1959, the Seventh-day Adventists bought the airport and renamed it Scottsdale Municipal Airport.
The airport was then used as a training base for the Civil Air Patrol. In 1966, the City of Scottsdale bought the airport back from the Seventh-day Adventists. The airport has been continually expanding since then.

Scottsdale Airport covers more than 282 acres and has one asphalt runway. The runway (runway 3-21) is is 8,249 feet long and 100 feet wide.

How Far is Scottsdale Airport from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport?
Scottsdale Airport is located about 15 miles from the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and 5 miles from downtown Scottsdale. It is a much smaller airport, but it still offers many of the same services as the larger airport…although it does not service normal commercial flights due to noise.
