Does Alaska Airlines Fly to New York? Sure…Just Not From LA!

June 30, 2021

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines will stop flying between New York's John F. Kennedy Airport and Los Angeles International after October 6th.

Yes, you heard that right...

Alaska Airlines has given up on one of the most coveted routes in North American air travel...New York to Los Angeles.

It's also perhaps the most competitive.

The airline confirmed in a statement to The Points Guy that they are exiting the route to focus on other routes to better compete:

“In the wake of the pandemic and our recovery from it, Alaska Airlines has reassessed our network strategy. We’re focusing our resources on where we can best compete and provide the most consistent, superior service to our guests.”

Alaska Was Trimming Flights on JFK-LAX After its Merger with Virgin America

Alaska seemed to struggle with the route after it's merger with Virgin America...

Virgin America was operating six daily flights between JFK and LAX. However, Alaska began trimming service on that route in 2018 in order to repurpose some of its JFK slots for nonstop flights in markets with less competition -- and where it might have more of a competitive advantage.

Alaska Will Focus on Alternate West Coast Cities Where it Has Done Well

Alaska plans to reroute the JFK slots to Portland, Seattle, San Diego as it doubles down on its core markets.

Smart move...squeezing profitability everywhere you can is more important than ever. If Alaska feels they'll get squeezed in the ultra-competitive JFK-LAX route its better for them to focus on the markets they already do well in.

Southwest Airlines has launched an Independence Day sale that lasts thru July 8th, with fares starting at $39 one way. The travel dates are between August 17th and December 16th with some restrictions.

Allegiant has added 4 new cities to its route map as part of its bigger expansion with Austin, Texas being a big push with the carrier.

Alaska Airlines has entered a codeshare agreement with Qatar Airways that provides route flexibility for both the U.S. and the Middle East.

Lufthansa's 'Eurowings' will ramp up holiday flights faster than expected as they plan on 21 active aircraft by middle of next year up from the initially proposed 6.

Boeing has dumped long-time lobbyist Tim Keating in a terse memo by CEO Dave Calhoun. No praise or thanks was in the memo suggesting things didn't end well.

Southwest Airlines is now running flights between Las Vegas and Maui and will add flights to Kona starting September 7th.
