Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport New Control Tower

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has just completed its new, $30 million control tower and has dedicated the new structure to the late Arizona Senator John McCain.

Current Arizona Senator Mark Kelly and state representative Greg Stanton were in attendance on Tuesday for the dedication.

“Completion of the John S. McCain III Air Traffic Control Tower is the culmination of years of hard work and determination by our local, state, and federal leaders,” said Brigette Peterson, who is the Mayor of nearby Gilbert, Arizona. “This bipartisan effort will help Gateway Airport continue to grow and create high-wage jobs across greater Phoenix.”

The new control tower is a much needed upgrade as Phoenix Mesa Airport and its adjacent communities explode in growth.

The new tower will be able to accommodate 8 air traffic controllers which is a significant increase. It stands 199 feet tall, which is 60 percent taller than the old tower, which still sits next to the new one.

The new tower officially opens this Saturday.

“McCain and Arizona’s Congressional Delegation were instrumental in efforts to remove the $2 million federal funding cap for construction of contract air traffic control towers,” Phoenix Mesa officials stated.
