An American Airlines customer experienced a shocking start to their day when they discovered unauthorized redemptions of their AAdvantage miles for car rentals, a clear case of fraud. The individual, who had accumulated over 400,000 miles, found their account nearly emptied with just over 20,000 miles remaining after the fraudulent transactions.

The unauthorized bookings were made through Rocket Rental Car Awards, a partner of AAdvantage Hotels, using the victim's miles. One of the rentals was for a Chevrolet Suburban reserved at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) under the name Keith White, costing nearly 300,000 miles. Another was for a Toyota Camry at Memphis International Airport (MEM) under the name Pamela Williams, using just over 152,000 miles.

Upon discovering the fraudulent activity, the customer immediately contacted Rocket Rental Car Awards' customer service to report the issue and attempt to cancel the car pickups. Despite a language barrier, the customer service agent assured that they would coordinate with Avis to prevent the theft and initiate a process to refund the miles for both bookings. The outcome of these efforts, however, remains uncertain.

This incident underscores the vulnerabilities associated with loyalty program accounts and the importance of vigilance in monitoring account activity.
