In a recent announcement that might have travelers sighing (or reaching for their wallets), American Airlines declared an increase in the cost of checking a first bag.
This change marks the airline’s first adjustment to these fees since 2018, setting the new price at $40 for most flights. However, for those proactive packers who manage to pay before reaching the airport’s tumult, a slightly reduced fee of $35 applies.
This financial uptick comes in the wake of rising fuel prices, a factor that American Airlines’ Scott Chandler, senior vice president of revenue management and loyalty, highlighted in discussions with USA TODAY. “Fuel has gone up quite a bit. That’s a big component of our costs when we’re carrying bags,” Chandler explained. “We periodically look at all of our costs and where we can sort of help balance cost out with revenues.”
Elite Status and Credit Card Holders Retain Free Baggage Perk
Despite this change, there remains a silver lining for elite frequent flyers, co-branded credit card holders, and premium cabin customers, who will retain their privilege of checking bags at no additional cost.
Chandler stressed the continued ease of airport experiences for these passengers, especially those who pre-register their baggage. “For all of them we want to make it also easy to go through the airport,” he said. “If all you’re doing is printing a bag tag, we’re investing in technology to make that really easy.”
The updated baggage fees take effect for itineraries booked from Feb. 20 onwards, sparing those with existing bookings from the increased rates. American Airlines‘ website offers a detailed overview of the revised fees by region for those curious (or concerned) about the specifics.
Softer Approach to Oversized and Overweight Bag Penalties Introduced
Adding to the financial reshuffling, American Airlines is introducing a revised fee structure for oversized and overweight luggage. A charge of $30 will now be applied to bags weighing between 50 and 53 pounds and luggage exceeding the 62-inch limit by up to three linear inches, softening the blow from the previously hefty fines of $100-$200 and $150-$200, respectively.
Chandler shared his perspective on the change, saying, “Obviously, it’s a little frustrating when you’re barely over the limit and you have to pay the entire charge. It’s really good for customers (who) might be just above that limit, and it is a lower fee. It should help manage the process at the airport, should help our employees and the customers as well.”
These adjustments will come into play starting April 17, offering a somewhat gentler approach to luggage limit transgressions.
