Etihad Airways landed its Airbus A380 in Tokyo for the first time on June 18, adding Narita to a short list of cities served by the airline’s most premium aircraft — and bringing The Residence, commercial aviation’s most exclusive product, to one of Asia’s busiest business hubs.
The A380 now flies from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow, Paris, Singapore, Toronto, and Tokyo Narita. With 8 of its 9 A380s back in operation following the post-pandemic drawdown, Etihad has been selectively expanding the superjumbo to routes where its premium-heavy configuration can generate the revenue to justify it. The aircraft carries 9 first class Apartments, 70 lie-flat business class seats, and The Residence — a 125 square-foot, three-room private suite that represents the pinnacle of commercial air travel.
The Residence used to command upwards of $25,000 one-way before the pandemic. The current path to booking it is more accessible than most people realize — it’s available as an upgrade from a first class cash ticket booked directly through Etihad’s website or via the Etihad Guest loyalty program, typically priced between $1,500 and $3,500 one-way depending on the route. Miles from partner programs like AAdvantage are not eligible for the upgrade.
Why It Matters: If Tokyo is on your itinerary and ultra-premium travel is on your radar, Etihad’s A380 via Abu Dhabi just became a legitimate routing option — with one of the most talked-about premium products in the sky on board.**
