Mexican airline Aerus has unveiled plans to introduce six new routes across the Yucatan Peninsula, enhancing connectivity and tourism within the region. Starting May 13, 2024, the carrier will commence direct services between Cancun and Cozumel, as well as between Cancun and Merida. The expansion continues from July 1, with additional routes from Cancun to Chetumal and from Cozumel to Chichén Itzá.

This development is aimed at fostering economic and tourism growth across the cities of Cancun, Cozumel, Mérida, Chetumal, and Chichén Itzá. According to a statement from Governor Mara Lezama, the initiative is expected to create job opportunities and promote the overall economic prosperity of the area.

Aerus has scheduled daily flights for the Cozumel-Cancun-Cozumel and Cancun-Mérida-Cancun routes beginning May 13. Starting July 1, the Cancun-Chetumal-Cancun service will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while the Cozumel-Chichén Itzá-Cozumel route will see daily flights.

Governor Lezama emphasized that these new routes would enhance the region’s tourist offerings and contribute to its development, making it even more attractive to the multitude of visitors to the Mexican Caribbean.

Founded in May 2022 by Grupo Herrera and headquartered in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Aerus began its operations with the intent to serve destinations lacking current air service. The airline announced its initial launch plans for the first quarter of 2023.

In a strategic move to bolster its workforce and fleet, Aerus plans to employ former Aeromar staff, following the latter’s cessation of operations. By 2025, the airline aims to operate 14 aircraft and employ 500 staff members, part of a $98 million investment to expand its reach. Aerus currently operates domestic and international flights in the northeast region, utilizing Cessna aircraft manufactured by Textron Aviation.
