Airbus is advancing its digital transformation through the implementation of a private 5G communications network, initially launching in France. This high-speed network is set to significantly alter the company’s approach to product design and manufacturing.

As part of this modernization, the use of smartphones and tablets is expanding across Airbus’ workshops and production facilities, playing a critical role in managing the growing volume of data exchanged with aircraft.

In alignment with its goal to “pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world,” Airbus is embracing the digitization of its operations. The deployment of a private 5G network ensures a robust, efficient, and secure IT infrastructure, crucial for the company’s data-intensive activities.

5G technology represents a significant upgrade over previous communications systems, offering up to 1.4 gigabytes per second—four times the capacity of Airbus’ current WiFi. This enhancement allows for the transfer of larger data volumes without the risk of network congestion.

To ensure safety and compliance, Airbus has adopted specific precautions during the network rollout. The chosen frequencies are carefully managed to avoid interference with active aircraft and comply with French and European regulations on microwave emissions, as confirmed by an external industrial safety audit.

One of the transformative impacts of this network is observed at the A350 final assembly line in Toulouse, where workers can now input data directly from mobile devices on the shop floor, eliminating the need to return to workstations—a notable boost in efficiency and productivity.

Moreover, the private 5G network supports the operation of autonomous guided vehicles at various Airbus facilities, enhancing logistics and assembly processes. The network also secures critical communications for on-site security personnel and emergency response teams.

The network is currently operational at the Montoir-de-Bretagne site and the Toulouse final assembly lines. Plans are set for a broader rollout by 2025 in Airbus locations across Germany, the UK, and Spain, with further expansions to include Airbus sites in Tianjin, China, and Mobile, USA. Pilot projects are also underway at Airbus Helicopters and Airbus Defence and Space, underlining the company’s comprehensive commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to streamline operations and enhance safety.
