Breeze Airways Sets Its Sights on Expansion: Plans to Operate 2,000 Routes

David Neeleman, the founder and CEO of Breeze Airways, has laid out an ambitious vision for the future of the airline, which commenced operations in 2021. In a recent announcement, Neeleman revealed plans for Breeze Airways to expand its route network tenfold, aiming to operate up to 2,000 routes. 

This expansion comes on the heels of the airline’s decision to increase its Airbus A220-300 fleet, a move that underscores its growth trajectory and strategic focus on underserved markets.

As of now, Breeze Airways maintains a route network comprising 200 destinations. The airline’s current fleet includes 22 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, with plans to bolster this number to 32 by the end of 2024 and reach a total of 90 by the close of 2028. This expansion was highlighted in February when Neeleman announced the exercise of options for an additional 10 Airbus A220-300s.

Fleet Evolution: The Transition to Airbus A220-300s Marks a New Era for Breeze Airways

In a strategy shift, Neeleman detailed that by the end of the year, Breeze Airways intends to operate its scheduled service flights exclusively with A220-300s. The airline’s 10 Embraer E190s will be repurposed for charter flights. This move is indicative of the airline’s confidence in the A220-300’s capabilities, particularly its range of up to 3,400 nautical miles, which makes it an optimal choice for long, slender routes across the continental United States.

Neeleman’s strategy focuses on connecting larger airports with smaller, underserved markets. This approach has recently been exemplified by the introduction of services between Denver and Providence, Rhode Island; Los Angeles and Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina; and San Diego and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. According to Neeleman, the majority of Breeze’s routes face no direct competition, highlighting the airline’s commitment to servicing underserved markets.

The economic efficiency of the A220 is cited as a cornerstone of Breeze’s business model, enabling the airline to turn a profit on less frequented routes. Neeleman emphasized the importance of securing additional A220s to accommodate the airline’s ambitious growth plans, noting that the high demand for A220 production slots necessitated the early exercise of options to secure the necessary capacity for expansion.

This strategic expansion underscores Breeze Airways’ commitment to enhancing connectivity across the United States, particularly for smaller markets that have historically lacked direct air service. Through its focus on innovative aircraft and underserved routes, Breeze Airways is poised to redefine air travel in the U.S.
