In a tense sequence of events at Mumbai Airport yesterday, a potentially catastrophic incident was narrowly averted when an IndiGo aircraft landed on the same runway from which an Air India jet was taking off. This harrowing encounter has prompted an immediate investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which also led to the derostering of an Air Traffic Control official.

Social media was abuzz with a video capturing the critical moment: the Air India jet soaring into the air just as the IndiGo plane touched down. The IndiGo flight, operating from Indore to Mumbai, and the Air India flight, bound for Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, found themselves simultaneously on the runway due to what appears to be an air traffic control oversight.

In their official response, IndiGo stated, “On Jun 8, 2024 IndiGo flight 6E 6053 from Indore was given landing clearance by ATC at Mumbai Airport. The Pilot in Command continued the approach and landing and followed ATC instructions. At IndiGo, passenger safety is paramount to us, and we have reported the incident as per procedure.”

Similarly, Air India confirmed that it had received clearance for takeoff from the same controller. “AI657 from Mumbai to Trivandrum was on take-off roll on June 8. The Air India aircraft was cleared by Air Traffic Control to enter the runway and subsequently cleared for take-off. The Air India aircraft continued with the take-off movement in accordance with laid down procedures. An investigation has been initiated by the authorities to find out more on the clearance given to the airlines,” their statement elucidated.

This incident brings to light the critical importance of stringent air traffic control protocols to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. As investigations proceed, the aviation community is reminded of the relentless vigilance required to prevent such near misses in the future.
