The WestJet Group is set to expand its fleet with the acquisition of a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from aviation leasing company AerDragon, a move aimed at bolstering its capacity for the upcoming 2024 operations. This aircraft, one among several being added to WestJet’s fleet this year, marks a significant step in the airline’s growth strategy.
Mike Scott, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of WestJet, emphasized the strategic nature of this acquisition. “In partnership with AerDragon, we are adding to our Boeing 737 MAX family and building momentum towards supporting our capacity growth plans for 2024,” Scott said. He highlighted the broader implications for Canadian travelers, stating, “Every aircraft added to our fleet means critical air access for Canadians, and today’s announcement further reaffirms our mission to provide affordable air travel.
While the new aircraft will enhance the operational capacity across WestJet’s network, it will initially lack the airline’s signature interior cabin experience. The company has prioritized the updating and refreshing of the interiors as part of its fleet reconfiguration plans. This initiative aims to ensure a consistent experience for passengers as swiftly as possible.
AerDragon’s CEO, Gang Li, also commented on the new relationship with WestJet. “We are pleased to welcome WestJet to AerDragon’s growing list of customers,” said Li. He expressed enthusiasm about the future, adding, “We look forward to continuing to support WestJet’s development and building a long-term partnership with the airline.”
The acquisition not only supports WestJet’s immediate growth needs but also strengthens its commitment to enhancing service accessibility and affordability for its customers, signaling a positive outlook for both WestJet and its clientele in the coming years.
