WestJet, a major player in the Canadian aviation sector, has recently bolstered its fleet through an agreement with BOC Aviation for the acquisition of three Boeing 737-8 aircraft. This move underscores the airline’s commitment to expansion and modernization as it prepares for increased travel demand anticipated in 2024.

The aircraft, all equipped with CFM LEAP-1B engines, are scheduled for delivery within the year, marking a significant step in WestJet’s fleet enhancement strategy. These new additions are expected to integrate seamlessly into WestJet’s operations, further solidifying its position as a leading airline in Canada.

Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation, expressed his enthusiasm about the deal. “We are delighted to welcome WestJet, one of Canada’s leading airlines, back to our customer base. This deal is a testament to our long-term relationship and our ability to evolve and meet our airline customers’ fleet expansion needs,” he remarked.

From WestJet’s perspective, the acquisition is pivotal for its growth trajectory. “Working with a trusted partner like BOC Aviation supports us in meeting our growth expectations for 2024,” stated Mike Scott, Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of the WestJet Group. He further emphasized the airline’s “ambitious growth strategy” which this partnership aims to support.

Currently, WestJet operates a diverse and technologically advanced fleet of more than 180 aircraft. Serving 100 destinations across 26 countries, the fleet consists predominantly of Boeing 737 MAX-8s, which constitute 77% of its total capacity. This is complemented by a mix of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, B737-8s, B737-7s, De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s, and Saab 340s.

This acquisition not only enhances WestJet’s operational capabilities but also reflects its ongoing commitment to maintaining a modern and efficient fleet, crucial for sustaining its competitive edge in the global aviation marketplace.
