The daily average of passengers in December reached approximately 216,000, with the 22nd of December marking the peak of the festive rush. On this day, nearly 250,000 passengers traversed through Heathrow, many reuniting with families for the holiday season.

Record Passenger Numbers Witnessed at Heathrow During December Festivities

Christmas Day was notably busy, with Heathrow efficiently managing the travel of 142,000 passengers. The day saw close to 800 flights arriving and departing, marking it as the airport’s busiest Christmas to date.

A key factor in the increased passenger numbers was transatlantic travel, particularly to and from North America. In December alone, 1.6 million passengers traveled between Heathrow and North American destinations. New York’s JFK airport was the most frequented destination in 2023, attracting over three million passengers.

2023 also marked a record year for Terminal 5, handling over 33 million passengers. December saw the terminal serve 2.6 million passengers, a significant contribution to its annual count.

Heathrow's Cargo Handling Sees a Notable Rise, Reflecting Global Trade Growth

Cargo operations at Heathrow were equally robust, with the airport processing 133,277 tonnes in December. The total cargo handled in 2023 amounted to over 1.43 million tonnes, indicating a growth of more than 2% from the previous year. This growth is attributed to the expansion of Heathrow’s long-haul network, benefiting traders and forwarders globally.

Heathrow’s global ranking as the fourth busiest airport was further solidified with an increase in its high-volume routes. By the end of 2023, the airport had 24 routes with over a million passengers each. Boston and Geneva were the latest additions to this list in December.

Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye commented on the airport’s performance, saying, “As we move into the new year, I want to extend my sincere thanks to all our Team Heathrow colleagues and partners for their hard and successful work over the busy festive period, which went really well in terms of service and operations. By ending 2023 on a high, a strong foundation is laid for 2024 during which Heathrow will continue to grow and to facilitate the UK’s potential for global growth.”
