In a landmark move, American Airlines has announced it will become the pioneering carrier to offer video streaming services across its entire mainline fleet.

This development distinguishes American Airlines from several competitors that restrict access to high-bandwidth applications, websites, and video conferencing services.

The announcement is part of a series of enhancements to American Airlines’ Wi-Fi offerings, including novel ways for passengers to access Wi-Fi either for free or by using AAdvantage miles.

Specifically, passengers aboard American’s Viasat-equipped domestic narrowbody aircraft will now have the choice to connect to Wi-Fi free of charge, albeit with advertising. An alternative paid option is available for an ad-free experience.

JetBlue and Delta Offer Free Wi-Fi, American Joins the Fray

This initiative positions American Airlines favorably against other airlines with partial streaming capabilities. Delta Air Lines, for instance, provides Delta Sync Wi-Fi, capable of streaming on select flights. Similarly, Alaska Airlines offers streaming-capable satellite Wi-Fi on certain aircraft, though not on its Embraer E175s and Boeing 737-700s.

American Airlines’ venture into complimentary Wi-Fi sets it apart, with JetBlue being the only other U.S. airline offering free, high-speed Wi-Fi across all seats and planes. JetBlue’s comprehensive Wi-Fi access has earned it the top spot as NerdWallet’s best airline for in-flight entertainment.

Delta Air Lines, not far behind, offers free Wi-Fi on most domestic flights and aims to extend this service to global routes by the end of 2024.

Timeline for Implementation of Wi-Fi Redemption via AAdvantage Miles

In addition, American Airlines revealed upcoming options for AAdvantage loyalty program members to redeem miles for Wi-Fi on select flights. Details regarding the cost in miles and the official launch date remain unspecified.

However, the airline confirmed, “American will start rolling out this new ability to redeem miles in the next few weeks on a couple select aircraft,” promising widespread availability on all Viasat-equipped narrowbody aircraft by the summer travel season.

Further enhancing customer value, American Airlines continues to highlight special offers from its partners on the airline’s partners page. Among these offers is an exclusive promotion from Apple TV+, providing new customers with a two-month complimentary subscription to continue enjoying Apple Originals discovered inflight.
